Personas & Problems: Best Practices

Writing Great Personas

Be Specific

❌ Bad: "User" ✅ Good: "Small Business Owner managing 5-10 employees"

Include Key Details

  • Role/Title
  • Main goals
  • Pain points
  • Technical comfort level

Checklist:

  • [ ] Create 2-3 specific personas
  • [ ] Include goals and pain points in descriptions

Defining Problems

Problem Structure

  • What is the current situation?
  • Why is it a problem?
  • What's the impact?

Example: "Teams waste 2+ hours/week in status meetings because project visibility is low, leading to delays and frustration."

Checklist:

  • [ ] Write 1-2 core problems
  • [ ] Link problems to personas (who has this problem?)

Linking to Features

Connect your personas and problems to features:

  • Persona → Feature (via "Related to" or "Contributes to")
  • Problem → Feature (which features solve this problem?)

Checklist:

  • [ ] Link each persona to relevant features
  • [ ] Ensure each problem has at least one solving feature

Tip: Good personas prevent feature creep!
